I Won't Be Silent 1.0 - Suicide Prevention Awareness Drive [April 2018]

The Counselling & Development Unit (CDU) of IICS recently conducted a 3-day suicide prevention awareness drive themed “I Won’t Be Silent 1.0” from 24th to 26th April 2018 during INTIMA week.

There were several activities at the booth:

A) “Be the Voice”

Students were encouraged to vote for reasons why they remained silent in certain circumstances based on the following 6 responses:

  1. It won’t change anything

  2. I don’t want others to think negatively of me

  3. I don’t care enough

  4. I’m unsure what to say

  5. Have previous negative experience with speaking-up

  6. No, I will SPEAK UP

Color stickers represented the students’ personal opinions towards the silent behavior in general. It was a platform for the students to realize and share about their experiences of speaking up or holding back own standpoint.

B) “You Matter”

This activity allowed the students to express their life motivations and hopes by doodling on envelopes about why they matter and what matters in their lives. Through this activity, the students could strengthen their self-awareness and make a commitment to self on appreciating lives.

C) “Your Reason to Live”

The students were invited to complete the “Reasons for Living” Inventory. This allowed them to be reminded and reflected over the important people, things, and experiences in their lives that make them appreciate own lives.

D) “Message of the Day”

CDU wanted to extend a big thank you to the attendees who stopped by and participated the activities at our “I Won’t Be Silent 1.0” booth. Hence, each attendee was given a chance to grab a take-home message with inspirational quotes. Many of the attendees found that the messages were well related to themselves.
